Kaleidoscope

In the autumn of 1998, as a result of a determination to confront the issues of racism, bullying, and equal opportunities in a positive way, the concept of holding an event, a 'celebration of diversity' at Thoresby Primary school began to take shape.

Work based on multi-cultural themes became the whole school curriculum topic for the summer term of 1999. We looked at the ethnic origins of our families, and found that 'we' came from Hull and over one hundred other places in Britain and the rest of the world.

Also in 1999, Kingston upon Hull was commemorating  the  700th anniversary of receiving its Royal Charter. This gave us the opportunity to put our school in a historical context and to take part in other events planned for the occasion. The Hull 700 celebrations made the moment 'just right' for our own events.

Then, in June 1999 came a fortnight's 'kaleidoscope' of art, music, drama, & dance from many cultures, with flavours of Asia, Africa, Australia, America; in fact, all the continents, including our own, were represented. The emphasis was on trying out new and exciting experiences, not usually available on the everyday school curriculum, and, above all, on having fun together!!

What you see here is a small sample of these experiences, provided by artistes, performers , (some of  them nationally and internationally renowned), along with friends from Hull and further afield, some at a cost, some free, but all well worth it!

In March 1998, Ofsted inspectors saw Thoresby Primary School's strengths, not just in the core subjects, but in the high priority and status given to multi-cultural issues. They described the school as …' a caring school with a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, where pupils bring a range of cultures, respected and valued by the whole school community…'

Events have included Indian, African and modern dance workshops, Tai Chi classes, drum workshops, various crafts including silk Batik, metal automata, clay, didgeridoo and boomerang building. Guests have included Roop Singh, a Sikh storyteller, Raymond Otto from South Africa, Louise an elegant dancer, Leap Dance Company, Spin Off Theatre Company, Ms Vickers an exciting club act and many other very talented people who have added a vibrant depth to our festival. Events included in this year’s programme promise to be even more exciting - do take the opportunity to come along and get involved!
